Seasonality:
Camus and Castel artichokes are two fairly similar varieties.
The Camus artichoke is historically an emblematic variety of Prince de Bretagne. It appeared in France during the Renaissance and is now the country’s most widely grown variety.
Its leaves are grey-green and its shape is round and copious. It has a refined taste and a soft heart.
Its cousin, the Castel artichoke (“castle” in Breton), is a more recent variety. It has an attractive green hue, slightly lighter than the Camus artichoke. It is known for its large and very fleshy base.
Cultivating the Camus and Castel artichokes
The mildness of the Breton climate and the quality of our soils give us two harvests per year. These artichokes are planted in March and April and in October and November. They are harvested entirely by hand in May and June and in September and October. The artichokes are refrigerated on the day of harvest in a cold room.
500 producers
The artichoke, all varieties included, is one of the stars of Breton vegetables. For all artichokes, the Pouliquen Group works with more than 500 producers spread over North Brittany. They are members of the SICA and Les Maraîchers d’Armor cooperatives.
