Organic leek

Seasonality:

The organic leek belongs to the Liliaceae family, like the garlic, onion and shallot. This vegetable has long green leaves and a white bulb which is the buried part of the leek. It is white in colour because it grows in the darkness of the ground.

Its taste is quite similar to onions, although it is less tangy. Leeks were cultivated and consumed in ancient Egypt. They were introduced and highly valued in France in the Middle Ages. Leeks were the main ingredient of a famous soup of that time, the “porée”. Even today, leeks are still widely used in soups, fondues, gratins and stir-fries.

Cultivating organic leeks

The leek is a crop that requires a great deal of technical skill and a lot of work. This plant does not do well in cold weather and therefore thrives in the mild climate of Brittany. Leeks are planted mechanically in May and June and harvested from November to April. They are harvested in bulk in the field, then washed and packed directly by the producers or at the packing station.
Organic leeks are available throughout the winter.

Our organic producers

The organic leeks distributed by the Pouliquen Group are produced by the organic market gardeners in the “Terres de Saint Malo” cooperative, located in the department of Ille et Vilaine in Brittany.
The Pouliquen Group is loyal to its producers. More than just suppliers, they are our partners.
All the fresh vegetables in Pouliquen’s organic range are certified organic and Global GAP.
